From plane germs to different pollutants in the air, when we travel our skin can really take a hit!
Here are my top tips to keep your skin tip-top while you travel:
1. HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE!!
We tend to forgo the most important factor of skincare at home, let alone when we are busy travelling. Not only should you be hydrating internally through drinking plenty of water (drop the gin...seriously!), but also through external means. This means applying a regular helping of hyaluronic acid to the skin before, during and after your flight, and throughout your travels. Hydration will minimise puffiness around the eyes, protect your skin barrier from all of the air conditioning and maintain skin integrity.
2. Make the most of plane time!
We all get bored on the plane, and I know you will agree with me on that one! Use the time wisely, and towards the end of your flight, start cleansing your skin ready for landing. This not only helps you save time once you reach your gorgeous hotel, but also rids your skin of all of those extra pollutants from the plane - dead skin cells, pathogens (I just know someone was coughing and sneezing the whole flight!) and general germs from arm rests & toilets... EXTRA TIP - Take a sealed plastic bag of damp cotton pads with you that you can dispose of once you've cleansed, so you don't have to go and use the toilet water!
3. Slather on that SPF!
This one really goes without saying, but prune skin is neither attractive nor safe! Every time you tan, let alone burn, you are causing irreparable damage to the DNA within your skin cells. The more you tan, the more likely you are to get pigmentation (sun spots) and wrinkles, which are the most prominent signs of ageing! Use a broad spectrum on the face and body - something which covers you for UVA (look for a star rating) & UVB (the SPF number).
4. Don't skip a day.
I know it's tempting to just leave your skincare routine for the night, especially if you've had a few cocktails around the pool! But, think about what you've been doing all day. Not only do you possibly have sunscreen and makeup on your skin, but chlorine & general germs from the day, too. Make sure you cleanse after being out during the day & night and reapply your skincare afresh. You don't want to wake up the morning after congested & dehydrated! Even if you feel rubbish, you shouldn't look it!
5. Treat your skin for the weather & activities.
If it's hot and sunny, get that SPF flowing & use some cooling face/eye masks if you feel it necessary. If it's cold, you will likely get more dehydrated due to central heating. Add in a hydrating product throughout the day - a hydrating mist is great because you can apply over make-up (I love the Pixi Hydrating Mist). Don't forget to use bug spray if you need it, but ALWAYS wash it off as soon as you can as it is full of chemicals! If you're having a city break, cleansing frequently will be your bestie...wash off that pollution as soon as possible.
6. Pack lightly if you can!
I know that we can't always take full sized products on a plane in our hand luggage, but that doesn't mean you have to just plump for face wipes! In fact, you'll have a lot less if you decant your products into little tester pots & label them up! Of course, this only works for shorter trips of a few days, but for a weekend city break, this is the perfect option to maintain your routine without compromising your skin health.
I hope these tips help you to look after your skin next time you pop off on your holidays! I'm always happy to help if you need some support with your skincare. You can book an online consultation if you need a chat with a professional from the Book Now buttons available across the website!
