It can be so hard to find the right products for your skin - and it's no good just grabbing whatever your friend's mum's neighbour uses because she said it was great...(no, seriously, step away from randomly recommended products!!)
In reality, all you REALLY need is:
- Make-up remover (if you wear make-up)
This is usually in the form of balms or oils, which break down make-up particles and make them easy to wash away. Use this in the evening only!
- Skin suitable cleanser
You will need to have identified your skin type to be able to choose the correct textured cleanser for you. As a general rule, the drier the skin the more oil-based & hydrating your products should be, and the oilier the skin, the more astringent they should be, such as foams, gels and milks. For your cleanser, the texture is more important than the ingredients, so you don't need to splurge! Use this morning & night.
- Toner
A water-based product, toner is designed to help maintain the pH balance of your skin. A toner is often classed as the 'first step' in your targeted routine, and should be suitable for your skin concerns. For example, if you are dehydrated, a hyaluronic acid toner will work well, or if you have blemishes a salicylic acid toner may be more suitable. Use morning & night.
- Serum
Serums contain highly concentrated ingredients, so you must choose one that is suitable for your skin concerns. This is the most powerful step for targeting your skin issues, so if you're going to spend extra somewhere...make it your serum! Use morning & night.
- Moisturiser
Like your cleanser, the texture of your moisturiser is important, but the ingredients are, too. A good combination of both will serve you well for your skincare. For those with more oily skin, a gel or light lotion will work well, while something with a higher oil content, or a more rich texture will help with dry skin. Use morning and night.
- SPF
Find a broad spectrum, face specific SPF, which will provide you with UVA & UVB protection and use it daily, year round. Using something face specific (not a general body sunscreen) will help prevent too much oiliness & congestion which lead to breakouts. Use in the morning & reapply throughout the day (a spray sunscreen will help if you're wearing makeup).
With these 6 products, you can put together a 5 minute, 5-step routine, and stop wasting time & money buying random fad products!
If you then wish to add in further products, like eye serums, exfoliators and masks, you can!
I hope this helps you realise you really don't need a 20 step routine to get better skin. Let me know if you need some support with choosing products.
